How many drunk people does it take to change a tire?
About 7. 2 to fix it. 2 to hold the beer. And 3 to make threatening looks at the missionaries.
So we had a pretty awesome week here. A lot of good things happening. We had an investigator at Church, and they stayed for all 3 hours so that was good. She is 9 but the whole family came and are starting to try to get active again. It's a really good thing to see. We had a great lesson with her this week, where the spirit was really strong and she was understanding the principles so well. She had actually taken a "Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith" off the shelf at her house and read a bit of it before we came, so she knew all about the First Vision and so it made teaching a lot easier. Really smart kid. So I guess right off the bat, most likely we will be having a baptism on the 7th of July. And more people are coming out of the woodwork for us to work with.
Our miles have been a bit of a problem. With all the small towns, and trips around, we've really have to scrimp and save. We've gotten pretty good at using our bikes. Actually, this is probably the best bike area of my mission. Mostly flat, limited hills, not much wind in town. Works for me. Elder Wadsworth is still getting into shape with the bike, and I feel bad sometimes because it's like 104 and we are biking like crazy, and talking to people on the side of the road and he's panting for air. It's cute though. He's really starting to figure things out and get the hang of it.
We had an awesome specialized training this week. It was all about "Fear, Duty, Love". Basically, there are 3 reasons people serve missions. Fear, Duty and Love. We read a talk about the different characteristics of each missionary, and I realized I had some in Fear, some in Duty, and quite a few in Love. So it was a great conference in that it made you feel like a terrible person, but also offered hope on how to improve. I've noticed I've really increased my love for the people, and I've actually started to enjoy talking to people on the street from my bike, something I used to not be so fond of. I preferred tracting to street contacting. I wish I'd heard the talk 22 months ago. Speaking of which...happy mission birthday. Today, 22 months. That is so weird.
We also did some cool service this week, helping a member butcher some pigs. I got to help with skinning part of it, and I had to move several of the organs to different containers. I feel like a mountain man now. Sorry to gross anyone out.
Also got to go to a member who had a gun store in their basement. That was pretty interesting. Tried to invite the non-member husband to hear the lessons but he declined. He then invited us to come to the range with him and shoot some of his AR-15's and Colt M4's, and we declined. Yep. "sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven" hymns no. 27.
Had a pretty good teaching experience with a guy who is really turning his life around. We'd been having problems with going over, and he would dominate the lesson and the conversation. But we role-played and practiced in companion study, and this week when we went by, we used the things we had practiced and managed to teach him the plan of Salvation without much digression. It was an awesome experience, as we testified and taught and saw him light up about different things. He completely accepted the Pre-earth life "there are people you meet, and you just know that you know them from somewhere" and the 3 Kingdoms of Glory "ya that's in the bible" So it really strengthened my testimony that people are being prepared all around us and we just have to find them! And remember that missionaries are terrible at finding. So we need those awesome members to help us out. Remember the 3 things, Ask inspired questions, promise blessings, and be commitment driven and you can't go wrong. If you're trying to find someone as a family, study Chapter 9 of Preach My Gospel.
Anywho, love you all! Have a good week!
Elder Gibb
